What Is an Engine Tune Up?

The term "tune up" has evolved significantly. On older vehicles with carburetors and distributors, a tune up meant adjusting ignition timing, replacing points and condensers, and setting the carburetor mixture. Modern fuel-injected vehicles don't have those components β€” but the concept of periodic maintenance to keep your engine running efficiently still applies.

A modern engine tune up at Greenville Automotive Solutions includes inspecting and replacing the wear items that directly affect engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions.

What's Included in a Modern Tune Up

  • Spark Plug Replacement β€” Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in each cylinder. Worn plugs cause misfires, rough idle, poor fuel economy, and increased emissions. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 30,000–100,000 miles depending on plug type (copper, platinum, or iridium).
  • Ignition Coil Inspection β€” Ignition coils deliver voltage to the spark plugs. A cracked or weak coil causes misfires on the affected cylinder. We test coil output and replace failed units.
  • Air Filter Replacement β€” The engine air filter prevents dirt and debris from entering the intake. A clogged filter restricts airflow, reducing power and fuel economy. Most filters should be replaced every 15,000–30,000 miles, or more frequently on dirt roads.
  • Fuel Filter Service β€” On vehicles with serviceable fuel filters, a clogged filter starves the engine of fuel, causing hesitation and power loss. Many newer vehicles have integrated fuel filters inside the fuel tank that are designed for longer service intervals.
  • PCV Valve Inspection β€” The Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve routes blow-by gases from the crankcase back into the intake. A stuck PCV valve can cause oil leaks, increased oil consumption, or rough idle.
  • Throttle Body Cleaning β€” Carbon buildup on the throttle plate and bore restricts airflow and causes erratic idle. Cleaning the throttle body restores proper idle control.
  • Visual Belt & Hose Inspection β€” We check serpentine belts for cracking and glazing, and radiator/heater hoses for swelling or deterioration.

Signs Your Vehicle Needs a Tune Up

  • Rough or uneven idle
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Hesitation or stumbling during acceleration
  • Difficulty starting, especially in cold weather
  • Check engine light on (misfires are a common trigger)
  • Engine running rougher than usual
  • Failed NC emissions inspection

How Often Should You Get a Tune Up?

Follow your vehicle's manufacturer maintenance schedule β€” it's printed in your owner's manual. As a general guideline:

  • Copper spark plugs: Every 30,000 miles
  • Platinum spark plugs: Every 60,000 miles
  • Iridium spark plugs: Every 80,000–100,000 miles
  • Air filter: Every 15,000–30,000 miles
  • Ignition coils: Replace when failed (no fixed interval)
